The Chicago Bears went shot-for-shot against the San Francisco on Sunday Night Football in a game that totaled 80 points, featured five different ties, and 936 total yards combined between the two teams.
Trailing 42-38, Chicago once again had the ball in their hands in the game’s final drive with a chance to win the game. With a league lead, six come-from-behind wins in the final 2:00, the Bears made it all the way down to the 49ers’ two-yard line.
Williams and the offense converted two third downs and a fourth down to keep the drive alive, and on the second-to-last play of the game, Chicago ran a hook-and-latter, and were stopped in bounds at the 49ers’ two-yard line, forcing the Bears to spike the ball, leaving four seconds left to run the game’s final play.
“The corner actually fell off – we thought he was actually going to attach a little bit more than he did,” Williams said. “We thought Swift was going to be able to get around the edge, the corner ended of sluffing off, he made a great play, and D’Andre got as much as he could.”
On the game’s final play, Williams received pressure from his left side from Byce Huff, who evaded the rush and kept the play alive as long as he could and threw it incomplete short of Jahdae Walker, as Chicago falls to 11-5, and out of the running for the No. 1 overall seed.
“We didn’t quite get aligned in the formation we wanted. It’s on me, I didn’t give (Caleb) the call fast enough, and so he’s trying to piece mail it together. I gotta do a better job on that,” Coach Ben Johnson said.
The Bears and the offense, after two straight possessions that ended in punts, put together six of their last five possessions and scored on all of them.
Williams ended the game with 330 passing yards and 25-for-42 yards passing. Before the game’s final drive, Williams was 20-for-29 with 281 yards passing. It was a breakout game for rookie receiver Luther Burden III, who returned after a one-game absence last week.
With eight receptions for 138 yards and a touchdown, Burden had the team and game-high in yards and receptions. Burden was injured on the game’s final play and was carted off the field. Johnson gave no update on his status after the game.
The concern is the Bears’ defense, which has allowed 40 or more points for the third time this season. Brock Purdy accounted for five touchdowns – three through the air and two on the ground. Chicago gave up six touchdowns, as San Francisco went 5-for-5 in the red zone, a week removed from holding Green Bay in four possessions in the red zone.
Chicago had just one sack, gave up 32 first downs, and 200 yards on the ground as Christian McCaffrey had 141 total yards at halftime and ended the game with 181 total yards.
“Having a shot in the end is all you can ask for in those moments,” Williams said. “But we have to do a better job overall, just execution. We made too many mistakes as a team. Whether it’s penalties, whether it’s alignments, or whether it’s assignments, we will go back and figure it out, and we will be truth tellers to ourselves, cause we got a great shot at the end of the season to put ourselves in a good spot, but also to get back on a role and get back on a run in the playoffs.”
