The Chicago Bears and quarterback Tyson Bagent agree on a two-year, $10 million contract that can be worth up to $16 million with incentives, per The Insiders.
Undrafted in 2023, Bagent, who played at Division II Shepherd University, has, over the past two seasons, earned and solidified himself as the backup in Chicago. In 2023, Bagent started four games for injured Justin Fields, and in those games, went 2-2.
Those have been Bagent’s only four appearances in games in the NFL, but in 2024 and the two games so far in the 2025 preseason, Bagent has been efficient. Now, under Ben Johnson, with a chance to grow, Bagent is one of the best backup quarterbacks in the NFL.
In the past few weeks, Bagent’s name has come up on trade rumors with his name linked to teams with quarterback needs like the New Orleans Saints. Still, off to a good start with Johnson, general manager Ryan Poles, who originally signed Bagent, now keeps the quarterback in Chicago through the 2027 season.
Bagent, entering his third season, was eligible to receive a new deal because he was undrafted, and with a career passing yards total of 870, a completion percentage of 66.2%, Chicago views Bagent as part of the future in Chicago.
During Sunday’s preseason 38-0 win over the Buffalo Bills, Bagent went 13-for-22 with 196 yards passing, a touchdown, and a 103.6 passer rating. He led three touchdown-scoring drives and one that ended with a field goal.
“Tyson’s a stud,” Poles said during the FOX broadcast Sunday. “There isn’t a harder worker on this football team than Tyson Bagent. You can see with his background coming from Shepherd, always kind of had an underdog vibe to him. And the dude’s just gritty, and he’s tough and continues to work and get better every single year.”
Bagent’s comments postgame Sunday about his placement on the roster and the quarterback depth chart with Caleb Williams ahead of him.
“I’m not really trying to do that,” Bagent said. “Like I stated previously, if everything goes well this year, this is it. I’ll be watching a lot of football this year. 18 will go out there and do his thing. This means the world to me — this is my life’s work being put into work right here in front of everybody. It means a lot to me. But I’m really just trying to get better myself day in and day out. Bank as many reps as possible and be ready as I can be for the long season that is coming.”
