Hired in 2022, Ryan Poles became the Chicago Bears 13th general manger in the teams history. Today, Poles received an extension to remain in Chicago through 2029, per Adam Schefter.

With two years left on his original deal, Chicago has locked in the general manger for the next five years.

Poles has overseen Chicago’s operations since 2022, with his first move being the hiring of former Bears head coach Matt Eberflus. Since then, Poles has rebuild the Chicago roster, most notably with the blockbuster trade on the No. 1 pick in 2023 to Carolina, which helped Chicago build an established core.

In the trade, Poles acquired wide receiver DJ Moore from Carolina, the No. 9 overall pick in 2023, which Chicago traded a pick down to No. 10 to draft tackle Darnell Wright, 2023 second-round pick No. 61 overall drafting cornerback Tyrique Stevenson, a No. 1 overall pick in 2024 which became quarterback Caleb Williams, No. 122 overall pick drafting punter Tory Taylor, and most recently a 2025 second-round pick taking wide receiver Luther Burden III.

After two and a half season with Eberflus at the helm where Chicago trended in the wrong direction, Poles was part of the decision to fire Eberflus, making the first time Chicago has fired a head coach midseason.

The Bears in the midst of a 10 game losing streak last season finished 5-12, but ended the season with a win over the Green Bay Packers.

This offseason Poles entirely revamped Chicago’s offensive line trading for Kansas Chiefs guard Joe Thuney, signing center Drew Dalman, and trading for Jonah Jackson, a former Pro Bowl right guard.

Pole also went out and added Grady Jarrett on the defensive line, and signed edge rusher Days Oedyingbo. Chicago once again were one of the more active teams in free agency and added looking to contend in a fierce NFC North division.

Another move that ensured Poles’s tenure in Chicago worth of an extension was hiring former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as Bears head coach.

As one of the most popular head coach opening in the league, Poles made sure to get the best candidate available to help set a culture and help the develop of Williams.

Poles and Johnson are now both under contract in Chicago through the 2029 season, and are looking to take Chicago to the playoffs for the first time since 2020, and help the franchise win its first playoff game since Jan. 16, 2011.
