Four days into free agency, and while lots of players have been able to find new homes or reach extensions with current teams, the field of remaining free agents is still flooded with talent.
At 39, Al Horford is still deciding on his future. After finishing his 18-year NBA season with the Boston Celtics, Horford enters the offseason as an unrestricted free agent, drawing interest from contending playoff teams.
ESPN’s NBA Insider Shams Charania appeared on SportsCenter to report that Horford, while considering options from teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and the Golden State Warriors, is also contemplating retirement.
Despite his age, Horford played in 60 games for the Celtics, starting in 42 of them, and averaged 9.0 points per game, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists. Horford was a vital piece for Boston in their 2024 NBA Finals win, playing in all 19 games, averaging 9.2 points per game, with 7.2 rebounds, and shooting 36% from 3-point range.
Even with the Lakers’ recent acquisition of DeAndre Ayton, the possibility of acquiring a backup center is still an option, leaving a potential partnership between Horford and Los Angeles a possibility.
However, the Warriors are desperate for a big man, and Horford might be the perfect fit in the Bay Area. Not expected to make that decision until next week, Charania said, Golden State is the frontrunner.
Losing Kevon Looney in free agency to the Pelicans, the Warriors currently have Quinten Post on the roster as a center and Trayce Jackson-Davis, who saw limited playing time last season.
Bringing Horford on board would not only bring in some needed depth – but Horford’s experience, ability to stretch the floor, and defensive strength would help the Warriors this upcoming season.
