With the NFL draft over and rookie minicamp for some teams coming this weekend, many free agents are still looking for a new team.
On Monday, a couple of those players found a new team. The big news was that linebacker Isaiah Simmons signed a one-year deal with the Green Bay Packers, reported by Jordan Schultz.
At just 26 years old, the once eighth overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft by the Arizona Cardinals will now be on his third NFL team after spending two seasons with the New York Giants.
Simmons, who impressed tremendously at the NFL Combine running a 4.39 speed as a linebacker, has never missed an NFL game, playing in 84 career games and starting in 42.
After Arizona did not pick up his fifth-year option, the Cardinals traded Simmons to the Giants in 2023 for a seventh-round pick in 2024. Simmons played in 2023 in New York as a hybrid safety who lined up as a linebacker to rush the passer.
In the offseason of 2024, the Giants re-signed Simmons to a one-year deal. Having only started in one game, his production on the field decreased to a career low.
Still young, Simmons will team up with Packers’ defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley because of his ability to stay healthy and versatility at nickel, linebacker, and safety.
Steelers add veteran wide receiver
Veteran wideout Robert Woods signs a one-year, $2 million contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, as the 33-year-old joins a relatively young receivers room, reported by Ian Rapoport.
Drafted in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft, he is now on his fifth team, and although his on-field production might not be what it once was, he has still proven to be an effective target.
With the Steelers current receiver room consisting of DK Metcalf, George Pickens, Calvin Austin III and Roman Wilson, Woods will provide a veteran voice in the locker room and help out with the quarterbacks on the roster.
In Woods’ two seasons with the Houston Texans to tallied 60 receptions, for 629 yards one touchdown, and 105 targets.
Diontae Johnson’s AFC North merry-go-round
Mike Garafolo reported that the Cleveland Browns signed wide receiver Diontae Johnson, who returns to the AFC North.
Picked by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft with the pick Pittsburgh acquired from the Raiders in the Antonio Brown trade, he was supposed to be wide receiver No. 1 for the Steelers.
Things were off to a good start for Johnson in his Steelers tenure when he had career numbers in 2021, leading to a Pro Bowl season, and later a two-year, $36.71 million extension with $27 million guaranteed.
After injuries plagued him in 2023 and the Steelers’ inconsistency at quarterback, Johnson was traded to the Panthers in March 2024 to give rookie Bryce Young a true No. 1 wide receiver. Due to the lack of winning and offensive structure, Johnson was dealt to the Baltimore Ravens at the trade deadline.
Johnson played in four games for the Ravens but was suspended for one game on Dec. 4 by Ravens executive vice president and GM Eric DeCosta for being a detriment to the team. Johnson was released on Dec. 20. As a Raven, he caught one ball for six yards.
The Houston Texans picked up Johnson off waivers on Dec. 23, but he was then released from the team on Jan. 15.
DeCosta would bring Johnson back for the Ravens’ playoff run after the team’s divisional round loss to the Bills was released.
Although Johnson is only 28 and has shown flashes of top league potential, it has been his failed quarterback play and the attention he has received on the field that have put him on his fourth team in just one season combined.
With the Browns’ only reliable receivers returning from last season being Jerry Jeudy and Cedric Tillman, Johnson could see himself in an involved role with Cleveland.
